Gilgit, 10 km from the Karakoram Hwy (KKH) in the northern frontier of Pakistan, is surrounded by mountains with glaciers, ice fields, and valleys. The beautiful Gilgit River runs through the city and soaring above Gilgit is breathtaking Mount Rakaposhi with an altitude of 7,788m.
Traveling further north and north east in the province of Gilgit, on the KKH, takes us to the famous Hunza, beyond the Muztagh and Karakoram ranges, we move onward to the borders of China, and finally to the Chinese cities of Tashkurgan, upal, andKashgar in Xinjiang. Gilgit is only 20km from the charming small village of Parri Bangla on the Karakoram Highway, and Chhamoghar a larger village east of Parri Bangla and 15km from Gilgit.
Gilgit is one of two major focal points for mountaineering expeditions. It is from Gilgit that climbers either venture to Karakoram or the Himalaya mountains.
