Punjab, one of the four provinces of Pakistan, is the richest and most populous state. The name Punjab is derived from the word ‘Punj’ meaning five and ‘Ab’ meaning water. The Fiver Rivers are Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Chenab and Jehlum and are all tributaries of the Indus in Punjab.
Punjab has more than 70 million people - half the population of entire country. The land of contrasts significantly, Cholistan desert in the south merges and changes into vast lush green fertile plains. Mid land Punjab has Potowar Plateau with an unusual landscape on one end to one the largest Salt Ranges in the world at the other. Beautiful Pine covered foothills of Himalaya merges with some of the largest mountains found anywhere on earth.
The most organized irrigation systems in the world are in Punjab, channeling water throughout Pakistan’s wheat, rice, cotton, barley, maize, pulses, oil seed, sugar cane and tobacco fields, and Punjab is also home to much of Pakistan’s industries that are producing items such as textile, steel, chemicals, fertilizers, sporting goods and surgical instruments.
